The chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu has urged the media to assist the commission in educating the public on the forth coming Continuous Voters Registration.
Professor Yakubu who stated this in Abuja during the quarterly Consultative meeting between INEC and the media explained that the first step of the registration would be done online.
He said the commission was introducing a portal to enable eligible Nigerians to commence registration as voters online before completing the exercise physically at designated centres Nationwide.
INEC chairman noted that this was the first time a major exercise of this nature is handled partially online in consistence with the commission’s commitment to deepen the use of technology in the electoral process in the country.
He said that there would be new registrants, requests for Intra and Inter-state transfers, as well as the replacement of cards as provided by law.
Responding, the National President, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Mr Chris Isiguzo promised continuous support from the media to ensure the sustenance of the country’s democracy.
