NALDA to establish rice farms in Ebonyi, Katsina

The National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to establish a rice farm in Ebonyi state.

It also plans to establish an Integrated Farm Estate to produce its own food and sell to generate income, with the first of the estate to be commissioned in Katsina state by the end of July.

The NYSC provided 52 hectares of land in Ezillo, Ishielu Local Government Area for the farm, while NALDA would provide inputs and the technical know-how.

Speaking at the signing of the MoU, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of NALDA, Prince Paul Ikonne said NALDA and the NYSC both have a responsibility to ensure the success of the partnership.

NYSC has manpower they churn out every year, while NALDA has the land and the technical knowledge. And it is these inputs that both parties would bring together to produce the much-needed job opportunity and food security that is being advocated by the President, He said.

He further disclosed that NALDA has successfully trained corps members to be soil Doctors and is willing to train more.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Shuaib Ibrahim said there was a need to tap into the potential of its huge human capital to contribute to national development.

He encouraged Corps members with agribusiness backgrounds to key into NALDA’s Young Farmers Scheme, citing instances of Corps members who have benefited from empowerment schemes of the establishment.
