The largest warship in Iran’s navy has caught fire and sunk in the Gulf of Oman.
The incident involving the Kharg happened on Tuesday under unclear circumstances, local media reported.
State TV and semi-official Fars news agency said the fire began around 2:25am local time and the vessel sank near the Iranian port of Jask, some 1,270 kilometres south-east of the capital, Tehran, on the Gulf of Oman.
Efforts by crew and others failed to save the support warship Kharg, named after the island that serves as the main oil terminal for Iran.
Photos circulated on Iranian social media of sailors wearing life jackets evacuating the vessel as a fire burned behind them.
Local media referred to the Kharg as a “training ship”.
Iranian officials have offered no cause for the fire aboard the warship, but it comes after a series of mysterious explosions that began in 2019.
