Abia State Water Bill 2021 has been signed into Law by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.
Performing the ceremony at Government House Umuahia, Governor Ikpeazu explained that the law was aimed at ensuring mandatory and adequate provision of potable water for the citizenry considering the critical importance of water in day-to-day life.
He noted that the law also assigned certain responsibilities to the people and offered the state government the needed legal platform to handle issues relating to water, calling on development partners not to relent in their support to the State government.
Chairman, Steering Committee on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Mr. Chris Ezem in a remark noted that the law was vital to the resuscitation of water schemes in Ubakala and Ariaria and lauded the support of development partners such as USAID E-WASH.
Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Utilities, Mr. Friday Chika said the law would reduce water borne health issues and commended the State government for the giant strides in providing the people with potable water.
Governor Ikpeazu also launched the Abia State Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Policy.
