Gunmen kill 7 in IDP camp, Benue youths protest

Armed men suspected to be herdsmen militia yesterday night attacked the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, Abagana in Agan Council ward of Makurdi Local Government Area killing 7 persons.

The attack which was said to have occurred around 12 am also left several persons injured.

Some youths of the area in response to the attack blocked the Makurdi—Lafia Highways with stones, logs of woods, and corpses of the victims of the attack.

A resident of Abagana community who narrated the incident to newsmen said the gunmen forcefully gained access into the camp, shot some, and used machete on their victims.

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom who visited the scene of the attack described it as barbaric, cowardly, and unacceptable and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to rise up to his responsibility of securing lives and property.

Governor Ortom lamented that in the past few months, more than 70 persons have been killed by herdsmen across the state, alleging that the leaders of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore were behind the attacks.

The Governor appealed to the President to convene a security summit where he (President Muhammadu Buhari) would personally address the nation on the state of insecurity and the way forward to surmount the challenges.

He also called on the President to declare a state of emergency on security.
