The federal government has promised amnesty to the inmate that escaped during an attack on the Owerri correctional centre if they return voluntarily.
The correctional centre was attacked by alleged members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, where more than 1000 inmates were released and property set on fire.
IPOB has however issued a statement denying any involvement in the attack.
The Minister of Interior Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola who inspected the level of damage to the facility urged residents especially community leaders to provide information on the whereabouts of the escaped inmates and those behind the attack.
Ogbeni Aregbesola said additional security would be provided at correctional centres across the country.
The Deputy Comptroller, Nigeria Correctional Service Owerri, Mr Seye Oduntan said the more than 1800 inmates were forced out of the centre by the gunmen but 36 returned shortly after, while six have been re-arrested.
