Some Igbo groups have threatened to withdraw their support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if the party fails to zone its 2023 presidential ticket to the South-East.
The groups including, the Igbo Leadership Development Foundation (ILDF) and the New Generation Leadership Development Foundation warned that there would be consequences if efforts at promoting peace and unity through dialogue is sabotaged; and if the aspiration of the South-East to produce the President of Nigeria in 2023 is frustrated.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja, the Director, Public Affairs of ILDF, Dr. Law Mefor, who cited provisions of the PDP Constitution to back up his argument, maintained that the rotation and zoning principle was engrained into the PDP Constitution in 2009, in pursuance of the principle of equity, justice and fairness.
Faulting the Governor Bala Mohammed Committee report, which recommended that the party presidential ticket should be thrown open, the Igbo group said, all the political parties in the country ought to flow with this national understanding that power is supposed to be moving South.
They called on critical stakeholders of the PDP and all well-meaning Nigerians to urgently and publicly denounce the Bala Mohammed report which advocated an opening of the presidential race to all parts of the country.
Dr. Mefor cautioning the PDP against repeating their 2015 mistake which he said made them to lose power.
