Nigeria Male Table Tennis Player Aruna Quadri was defeated by the Chinese Taipei’s Yun-Ju Lin 3-1 at the World Table Tennis, WTT Contender series in Doha, Qatar.
Africa’s sole survivor, Aruna Quadri was sent packing from the competition at the quarterfinal stage on Friday.
He was the only African to reach the quarterfinal stage of the tournament.
Quadri, who is ranked as number one in Africa and 20th in the world was left shell shocked by the fast start made by world number 7, Yun-Ju Lin who won the first two games 8-11 and 9-11, before he attempted to start a comeback as he won the third game 17-15.
His hopes were snuffed out in the next game as Yun-Ju Lin won 9-11 to end the match with a 3-1 victory and progress into the semifinals.
On his way to the quarter-final, Quadri defeated the newly-crowned Indian national champion Sathiyan Gnanasekaran 3-0 (11-7,11-4, 11-8) in the first round of the men’s singles at the WTT Contender Series.
He also defeated Portugal’s Joao Geraldo 3-2 (12-10, 12-10, 4-11, 11-6) before bowing out in the quarter-final of the $200,000 WTT tournament.
The Nigerian will be hoping to qualify for the Olympic Games during the World Singles qualification tournament at the Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiya Arena in Doha, Qatar between March 14-17 2021.
Meantime, Dimitrij Ovtcharov won the men’s singles title in Doha on Saturday (6 March).
The absence of Chinese opposition, due to COVID-19 precautions, presented an opportunity for the best of the rest in the run-up to the Tokyo Olympic Games.
