FG approves the establishment of SIM swap centres

Ministerial Task Force on Sim-Swap has approved the establishment of dedicated Sim-Swap centres by Mobile Network Operations, MNOs, across all Local Government Areas in Nigeria.

The Task Force also approved the extension of tenure of National Identity Number Enrolment Agent Licences for MNOs from one to five years in consideration of their satisfactory performance, subject to continuous monitoring.

This was part of the resolution reached during the Fourth Review Meeting as a deliberate effort by the Federal Government to simplify the enrolment process for Nigerians and illegal residents.

According to a joint statement by the Director, Public Affairs, Nigerian Communication Commission, NCC, DrIkechukwu Adinde, and his counterpart in the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, Mr. Kayode Adegoke, the meeting was chaired by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantani, who mandated a Technical Committee to complete the development of a more reliable and foolproof Sim instance strategy, to ensure that there is no repeat of the past process that was compromised through pre-registration by some agents.

The Minister also charged the NCC to work with the NIMC and MNOs, to come up with a framework for the establishment of Sim-Swap mad Replacement Centres in each of the seven hundred and seventy-four LGAs in the country, beginning with critical and feasible locations.

The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Professor Umar Danbatt, briefed the meeting on the outcome of the Senate Investigative Hearing on 5G Development in Nigeria, which took place on February 25, this year.

Professor Danbatta commended the Minister for dispelling fears about the public health and security implications of 5G, as well as making a case for 5G in the country.

All stakeholders agreed on the need for the country to deploy 5G technology.
