Nasarawa State Government has threatened to shut down the Lafia Ultra Modern Market if the management fails to carry out sanitary work on the market within seven days.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources Mr Musa Ibrahim handed down the ultimatum while monitoring the monthly environmental sanitation in Lafia.
Mr Musa Ibrahim who expressed displeasure with the unhygienic condition of the market, especially the chicken section of the abattoir said the state government would not condone any habit tantamount to public health hazards.
He directed the management of the Modern Market to commence immediate cleaning and clearing of all the filths and wastes around the market or face sanction.
Meanwhile, over 42 persons have been prosecuted by the State Environmental Sanitation Mobile Court for alleged violation of the February sanitation exercise.
The Presiding Judge, Mr Shittu Umar, sentenced each of the suspected violators of the state environmental laws to six months imprisonment or pay between five and fifty thousand Naira fines.
