The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC has rescued a teenage girl identified as Ada, who was chained by the neck, limbs and locked up by her parents at Umuokoro Obinkita Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia state.
NSCDC Abia command said the successful operation followed a tip-off from social media where the incident was first reported and support from civil society organizations.
According to an eyewitness, the victim was placed in chains and locked in the house by her mother identified as Blessing.
The mother who had been arrested alleged that her daughter was struck by a mental ailment, a situation that led to the action to prevent her from straying away.
Earlier, the First Lady of Abia State, Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu who is also Chairman of the State Action Committee on Gender-based violence had ordered an investigation of the online posts to unravel the facts and rescue the child.
Represented by Chika Ojiegbe at the state Headquarters of Civil Defense Corps, the First Lady said there is no excuse for the inhuman treatment meted on the girl by her mother.
“She should have rather sought medical help for her child if she claims that her daughter had poor mental health were true.”
The Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Mr Ndukwe confirmed the arrest and said the State Commandant of the Civil Defense Corps has directed a thorough investigation of the incident.
He added that the victim has been handed over to the Management of Vicar Hope Foundation a pet project of the First Lady of Abia state, for rehabilitation, treatment, and care.
