ECOWAS Parliament says it recorded great success during the last quarter of 2020 , essential to the execution of the programs of the Parliament.
Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Sidie Tunis made the statement at the opening of the 2020 second Ordinary Session held virtually.
According to him, the Parliament was able to meet last November in Cotonue, Benin Republic to adopt this year’s budget of the Parliament in accordance to the Supplementary Act relating to the Enhancement of Power of the ECOWAS Parliament.
He said the budget which is an increase of 4% from the approved revised budget, was to meet the aspirations of the people of the region.
“The budget, as adopted by the Bureau, sought to strengthen economic and social development, reinforce security and support democratic values in the ECOWAS sub-region as directed by the Extraordinary Summit of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government held on 23rd April 2020. It also focuses on high impact programs and projects that have long-lasting effect that meets priority needs of the ECOWAS Member States and represents an increase of UA 785,404 or 4.00% from the approved Revised Budget UA 19,649,080 for 2020.”
Another area of success, was in the ability of the Parliament to hold three joint committee meetings in the last quarter of 2020.
They included the Meeting of the Joint Committees on: Administration, Finance, and Budget; Macroeconomic Policies, Economic Research; Public Accounts; Trade, Custom & Free Movement.
Meeting of the Joint Committees on: Agriculture, Environment & Natural Resources; Industry and Private Sector; Health; Energy and Mines; Social Affairs, Gender & Women Empowerment.
And Meeting of the Joint Committees on: Education, Science and Technology; Telecommunication and Information Technology; Political Affairs, Peace, Security and Infrastructure;
Also held at the period was the Meeting of the Ad-hoc Committee on the study for the Direct Elections of Members into the ECOWAS Parliament.
Sidie said the ongoing session would consider and adopt the reports of the meetings.
The second Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament, held virtually is to consider the budget of the Parliament which the speaker said “is to ensure that the estimate are directed towards programs that address the needs of the people”.
