Rear Admiral Ndubusi Kanu (retd), National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) chieftain and former Governor of Lagos and Imo States is dead.
He reportedly died of COVID-19 complications in the early hours of today (Wednesday).
Born in Abia State in 1943, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu’s naval career included positions in Personnel, Logistics and Training.
In July 1975 as a Lieutenant Commander he was appointed a member of Murtala Muhammed’s ruling Cabinet, the Supreme Military Council and appointed Governor of Imo State in March 1976 during the military regime of Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo.
He was transferred to become Governor of Lagos State in 1977 and left office in July 1978.
After his retirement, Admiral Kanu joined the pro-democracy movement, NADECO and played a leading role in the agitation for the actualisation of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.
In 2014, the then Governor of Lagos, Mr Babatunde Fashola named a recreation park, situated within Alausa Ikeja, the Lagos State capital after Ndubuisi Kanu.
