Four people have been killed on Friday night in Tse-Angbande Village, near Makurdi by armed men.
They attacked the village around 11pm and shot the victims in their sleep.
Seven other people were injured, as residents fled the area.
Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom who visited the village in the company of security agents condemned the attack and killing of helpless villagers.
Governor Ortom appealed to residents to return to the village, giving assurance that security agents would be drafted to the area to forestall any further attack.
He also said the state security council would soon meet to map up strategies to checkmate the hit and run style which have been adopted in recent times.
Governor Ortom later visited the seven injured people at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi where he promised to pay their medical bills.
