The Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen and wives of Governors have held a candlelit procession in remembrance of victims of gender based violence and rape.
At the event in Abuja on Monday, Dame Tallen said the procession was part of the 16 days of activism to end violence against women and girls as well as to honor those who died by the violence.
The Minister, commended the efforts of state governors for declaring a state of emergency on violence against women and girls, urged all the states to domesticate the Child Rights Act and the Violence Against persons (prohibition) Act (VAPP).
The Chairperson, Nigeria Governor’s Wives Against Gender Based Violence and Rape and the wife of the governor of Ekiti state, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi said they were deeply concerned about the rate of violence against women and were working collectively to address it.
“As governor’s wives we have come up with an action plan to take up this issue forward. We will continue to work with the minister and everyone to use whatever platform or voice they have to draw attention to this issue” she said.
Wives of the state governors of Sokoto and Zamfara states alongside various women groups and representatives of religious organizations were present at the candlelight procession.
