The Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman designate, Yakubu Mahmoud has urged the Senate to consider and pass the electoral Act Amendment bill ahead of the 2023 general elections.
He made the appeal when he appeared before the Senate committee on INEC on the screening as Chairman of the Commission for another five year term.
He said the electoral body is faced with series of challenges that could hamper the 2023 general election if not addressed.
He express happiness that Nigeria’s electoral process is making huge progress in the right direction, based on the lessons learnt from previous elections.
According to prof. Yakubu, Nigeria is investing heavily in human capital and infrastructure to help strengthen electoral systems of some African countries including Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
He also informed the senators that efforts were already being intensified to ensure a successful conduct of the 2023 elections.
The report of the screening is to be submitted to the Senate on Tuesday for confirmation after consideration in the committee of a whole.
