The US has recorded its second-highest number of new coronavirus cases in a single day.
At 76,195 cases, it’s fast approaching the previous record of 77,299 cases reported on July 16, according to a Reuters tally.
The new figures emerged just hours after US President Donald Trump claimed the country was “rounding the corner” on COVID-19 during the final presidential debate with his Democratic challenger, Joe Biden.
According to the Reuters analysis, cases, hospitalisations and fatalities are all accelerating as cooler weather descends on much of the US.
Only India has reported more cases in a single day: 97,894 on September 17.
Asked about his handling of the pandemic as part of the presidential debate earlier on Thursday, Mr. Trump predicted a reversal to the crisis that has killed more than 223,000 people in the US, saying: “The virus is going away.”.
