The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC says it will conduct Bakura State Constituency in Zamfara State House of Assembly on 31st October, 2020 in which 16 Political parties were cleared to participate.
Resident Electoral Commissioner in charge of Zamfara state Mrs Asmau Sani Maikudi revealed this during a stakeholders forum on the bye election held at the INEC Headquarters Gusau, Thursday.
Mrs Maikudi explained that the bye election was as a result of the death of Tukur Jekada Birnin Tudu, member representing Bakura State constituency in the state House of Assembly on 29th May, 2020 as notified by the Speaker of the House in a letter dated June, 6th 2020.
She said the constituency has a total of 92,697 registered voters, 10 Registration Area, 114 Polling Units and 9 Voting Points adding that, 89,615 Permanent Voter Cards have been collected leaving a balance of 2,235 which at present in the Central Bank of Nigeria, Gusau Branch.
Mrs Asmau Maikudi who stressed the INEC’s determination to conduct free, fair, credible and acceptable election revealed that, Lecturers, Students of Federal Tertiary institutions, members of National Youth Service Corps and staff of Federal establishment are to be used as Ad-hoc staff for the election.
She said the election is going to be conducted under strict compliance with COVID-19 protocols and guidelines which includes wearing of face mask, physical distancing between voters on the queues among others.
She warned both staff and ad-hoc staff of the commission to desist from any malpractice as INEC will not hesitate to take legal action against any defaulter.
The state Governor represented by the his Deputy Barr. Mahadi Ali Gusau gave assurance of adequate security and promised to ensure free, fair and credible election.
In attendance were security chiefs, political parties leaders, NGOs among others.
