The Nigeria Governors’ Forum says it is making efforts to reverse the decision of the Nigeria Labour Congress to embark on industrial action on Monday.
Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Ekiti State Dr Kayode Fayemi stated this after a meeting with the leadership of the union in Abuja.
Dr Fayemi explained that Governors have decided to wade into the on-going negotiations with a view to broadening consultations and pleaded with the NLC that the timing of the industrial action was wrong and could aggravate the already worsening economic situation if not averted.
The NGF chairman emphasised that the plight of workers in the country was already in shambles and any industrial would worsen the economic situation.
The leadership of the NGF is pleading that Governors should be given time to consult more broadly with the various stakeholders, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, the vice president as well as the president on the issue.
On his part, the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Comrade Ayuba Waba said the Federal Government violated the process of dialogue and thanked the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum for his efforts to ensure that union returns to the negotiation table.
“I praise you for showing a good grasp of this matter and I believe that if they had widened the mechanism for consultation and involved people like you, we wouldn’t have come to this level.” Comrade Waba explained.
The president of the NLC Comrade Ayuba Wabba was accompanied by the TUC President comrade Quadri Olaleye and the General Secretary, of NLC Comrade Emmanuel Ugboajah, to the meeting.
