The Speaker of the house, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila says the current security challenges facing the country undermine the public Faith in the government ability to protect the people.
The Speaker made the observation while declaring open, a two day retreat on promoting effective legislation and oversight of the security sector in Nigeria.
Mr Gbajabiamila stated that the people at the moment, are experiencing in many parts of the country, significant internal security challenges that have disrupted lives and property at a scale that cannot be quantified.
The Speaker added that the three arms of government have a shared responsibility to take all necessary actions to meet the security challenges head on.
The chairman house Committee on national security, Alh Sha’aban Sharadda, said the retreat was organised by the committee, in collaboration with the Konrad Adeneur Stiftung foundation to brainstorm on ways of tackling the security challenges in the country.
Alh Sha’aban Sharadda, said the committee is to seeing that all security agencies under it are provided with the necessary support to succeed in their mandate.
The Lawmaker, who commended president Muhammadu Buhari’s effort in addressing the security challenges across the country, state that the committee is working on a Bill on proliferation of small and light arms as part of efforts to tackle insecurity.
The gGovernor of Zamfara state, Alh Muhammad Matawalle who was represented by his special adviser on security matters, Alh Mamman Tsafe, stressed the need for the review of the traditional system of budgeting, which places a ceiling on the amount allocated for the nation’s national security.
The Resident representative of Konrad Adeneur Stiftung foundation, Dr Vladimir Kreck, revealed that the organization has been partnering with different government institutions in Nigeria, including the house, in the area of security to find lasting solutions to the challenges in the sector.
