Sergeant sentenced 7 years for manslaughter

A Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, has sentenced a dismissed police sergeant, attached with Special Protection Unit, Ologunowa Ojo, to seven years Imprisonment for manslaughter.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo gave the verdict after finding him guilty.

He however said time spent in prison while undergoing trial shall be discounted from the prison sentence.

Ojo was said to have shot dead one Taiye Akande in the Shapati, Ajah area of Lagos State on February 3, 2016, while he was on security duty at Frajend Investments Nigeria Limited.

Akande was said to have had an argument with the police sergeant after he (Akande) sat on the company’s fence. Ojo was said to have shot him in the buttocks, which became fatal.

Akande died in hospital shortly after.

The police authorities set up an orderly room trial, leading to Ojo’s dismissal from the force.
