President Muhammadu Buhari is to present the Nigeria National Honours award to the best teacher of the year in appreciation and recognition of teachers
UpThe Minister of State for Education Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba stated this in Abuja at a media briefing to commence activities for the celebration of this year’s world teacher’s day.
Mr Nwajiuba said to ensure motivation and quality service delivery the federal government instituted the Presidents Teachers and schools Excellence Award as part of world teacher’s day celebration.
Mr Nwajiuba explained that instrument for the nomination of potential awardees was sent to all states ministries of education and the FCT and their submissions were backed up with evidence authenticity.
He said ‘’Only twenty four 24 states responded with submissions for the five award categories namely: Best Approved private school teacher and best public school administrator, each category has three levels that accumulates to a total of twenty four 24 awards, furthermore, seven hundred and seventy four best teachers one from each of the seven hundred and seventy four Local Government Areas from which the best teachers were chosen would also be rewarded to ensure that the process start originates from each local Government in Nigeria’’
The National President, Nigeria Union of Teachers Dr. Nasir Idris stressed the need for teachers to be provided with opportunities for regular training and continuing professional development.
Dr Idris represented by the National Publicity Secretary Mr Hamba Audu noted that teachers needed to be provided with conducive environment and empowered to be able to meet the new trends, challenges and demands of the 21st century and to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all
The theme for this year’s world teacher’s day is Teachers: Leading in crises, reimagining the future.
