Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has called for an investigation into the accident that claimed about 30 lives when a commercial bus carrying mourners plunged into Akaezeukwu River at Afikpo-Okigwe Expressway.
He made the call when he visited the scene of the accident to ascertain how search-and-rescue operation was being conducted.
Governor Umahi cautioned drivers to be careful while plying the road and commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic circumstance.
About 14 bodies have been recovered from the river so far.
Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ebonyi State Command, Mrs. Stella Uchendu explained that the bodies were recovered by divers who located the ill-fated bus in the depth of the river. She explained that the bodies were 7 males and 7 females and had been taken to a mortuary in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi state.
The bus was lifted out of the river by a crane while the search for the remaining 12 passengers was ongoing.
