International Day of Democracy: Tambuwal condemns electoral malpractice

Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal

Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, has condemned desperation on the part of politicians who cut corners to win elections.

Alhaji Tambuwal who made his position known in a statement to commemorate the 2020 edition of United Nations International Day of Democracy maintained that any electoral victory obtained through means other than the legitimate votes of the people was nothing but a coup d’état.

The former speaker of the house of Representatives said the Edo State Governorship Election scheduled to hold this Saturday as well as that of Ondo State were test cases of the nation’s preparedness for a rule-based governance.

While making a case for electronic voting, Governor Tambuwal advocated that provisions should be made for a test run before the 2023 general election.

The sokoto state Governor emphasised that good governance anchored on a sound economy with infrastructural development were the bedrock for sustainable democracy.

The United Nations General Assembly in 2017 resolved to observe the 15th of September every year as the International Day of Democracy, with the purpose of promoting and upholding the principles of democracy.
