Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development Hajiya Sadiya-Umar Farouq has announced the takeoff the National Disability Commission following the approval of the appointment of the Executive Members of the Commission by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.
In a statement by her Special Assistant Strategic Communications, Mrs Halima Oyelade, the Minister thanked the President for approving the appointment of the Executive Secretary, Chairman and Council Members of the Commission.
It stated that, the establishment of the Commission and Executives in place would help improve the plights of People Living With Disabilities (PLWD) in the country and enable them contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
She congratulated the Persons Living With Disabilities in Nigeria on this giant milestone achieved and charged them to maximise the platform that has been provided for them, noting that once the Senate confirms the appointments, the Commission will take-off accordingly.
According to the statement, the functions of the Commission would include; the formulation and implementation of policies, guidelines appropriate for education and social development of persons with disabilities, preparation of schemes designed to promote the social welfare of persons with disabilities, promoting and uplifting the general well being of persons with disabilities.
