FEC directs clampdown on illegal mining sites

The Federal Executive Council, FEC, has directed Office of the National Security Adviser to set up a special unit to carry out targeted operations at identified and confirmed illegal mining sites across the country.

FEC also directed the NSA to facilitate the erection of storage facilities for explosives across the 6 geo-political zones for mining purposes.

Briefing newsmen on the outcome of today’s FEC meeting, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammad, who spoke on behalf of the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, said storage of mining explosives in military and police formations was unsafe.

FEC also directed the Federal Ministry of Finance to deduct states and local governments from federal accounts allocation if they were reported to have collected illegal taxes and levies from duly registered miners.

The directives were the result of the complaint of insecurity, double-taxation, pollution and other factors barring investors from developing the steel industry.
