Soldier sentenced to 45 years imprisonment

A General Court Marshal (GCM) sitting in Command Mess 1 Abuja has sentenced a soldier of the Nigerian Army to 45 years imprisonment for culpable homicide , theft and house breaking..

LCPL Babangida Ibrahim was accused of  killing and robbing one Mr Bello Abdullahi Aliyu in Gidan Darib, Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State in 2014.

He pleaded guilty to the crime and was subsequently sentenced to 55 years imprisonment in line with the provision of sections 114, and 110(a ) of Armed Forces Act Cap A20 Law of Federal Republic (LFN) 2004 and sections 224 and  287 of  the Panel Code Cap P3 LFN 2004.

President of the Court, Major General Priye Fakrougha admonished the Armed Forces of Nigeria to adhere strictly to rules and regulations guiding the conduct of Military personnel in and out of uniform.

As a responsible army, we carry out our constitutional mandate inline with the provision of extant laws. Any personnel that goes against these laws would be sanctioned to serve as lessons to others”, he said.

LCPL Babangida is sentenced to 40 years in the first count.

The second, third and fourth counts, of five years each will run concurrently.

The verdict is however subject to Nigerian Army council confirmation.
