Police invite 4 officers over alleged rape case

Four Police officers who were involved in an alleged case of raping a woman for not wearing face mask along the East-West road have been invited by the Rivers State Police Command for questioning.

Speaking to Newsmen at the Command Headquarter in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni said the Commissioner of Police Joseph Mukan has ordered that the case file should be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for proper investigation.

On the 29th of July 2020, a woman who was said to be a widow and a mother of two had accused a Police Officer identified as Inspector Peter Ebah of forcefully abducting and raping her till daybreak after she was arrested for not wearing a face mask.

Narrating her ordeal, the woman said she was in a bus en route Eleme from Bori at about 6:30 pm of the same date when Police Officers led by the said Inspector Peter Ebah asked her to alight from the vehicle around Saakpenwa junction, pretended that she will be taken to the Police station at nightfall, only to take her to a guest house at gunpoint and raped her till daybreak.

The woman said she cooperated with the officer to avoid being killed but managed to send out a Save Our Soul (SOS) message to a close friend while at the guest house located along Kera before her mobile phone went off.

Meanwhile, a Human Rights Advocate in Rivers State, Prince Wiro who called on the Police to immediately commence an investigation into the incident for Justice to be served, described the report as embarrassing, shocking, and unpalatable.

The Rights Activist said there is no justification for the punishment meted out on the woman by an officer who is supposed to protect lives and property.
