Labour issues ultimatum over salary deductions

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have issued a seven day ultimatum to Niger State Government to refund the thirty percent deducted from June salary of civil servants.

Chairmen of TUC, Comrade Inusa Tanimu and that of Joint Action Committee of NLC Comrade Mahmud Aminu Muye at a press conference in Minna, warned that the government would face industrial action if the monies was not refunded.

Comrade Inusa lamented that while negotiation was ongoing with the government, it (Government) still went ahead to deduct from the salary of civil servants.

Comrade Mahmud, on his part, described the action by Niger state government as illegal and unacceptable.

He said with thirty percent salary slash, most civil servants will be left with nothing to take home after bank deduction and settlement of loan.

Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Alhaji Mohammad Sani Idris said the thirty percent salary slash was necessitated by the ravaging coronavirus pandemic and dwindling economic crisis.

He said the deduction was temporary and that the balance would be paid as soon as the economic situation improves.
