The wife of the Kaduna State Governor, Mrs. Aisha El-Rufai has called for severe penalties and punishment for perpetrators of rape and other gender-based violence through the active implementation of already existing laws.
She made the call at a rally in Abuja organized by a Non-Governmental Organisation, Movement Against Rape and Sexual Violence which began from the unity fountain to the complex of the National Assembly.
According to her, the enactment of laws that would ensure quick trial of rape case and justice for victims as well as deter intending perpetrators of rape from carry out such act.
“We want very sever penalties for rapist. It is unacceptable that person who rapes is given seven years or twelve years, the person should be locked and the key thrown away”.Mrs El-Rufai stated.
She further advocated the adoption of religious laws as alternatives to addressing the rising cases of rape and other gender-based violence.
The speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila who received the group at the National Assembly said the House was working on laws to squarely address the rate of rape in the country and promised to collaborate with the organization to ensuring the implementation of existing laws.
