Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Ibrahim Isa Pantami says the ministry is working on reducing the cost of data and other mobile network charges.
Dr. Pantami who stated this while addressing participants of a workshop on Digital Skills for ICT journalists in Abuja said, a major contributor to the high cost of data and other Telecom charges was the cost of right of way in various states which he said was being tackled by the ministry in partnership with the 36 state governors of the federation.
The minister while noting that in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, broadband penetration is critical to data access for the digital economic sub-sector to thrive, described the media as key to the orientation of the citizenry on the ‘new norm’ brought by the pandemic.
Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mr. Kashifu Abdullahi described the event as timely and commended the media in mass sensitisation of the people on the opportunities that abound in the digital economy sub-sector.
President, National Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA), Mr. Blessing Olaifa of ‘The Nation Newspaper’ described the minister as a blessing to the present administration and pledged the commitment of the association in fostering development through its reportage.
The five-day workshop is meant to expose participants to new norms in journalism and news gatherings in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
