Florida shatters US record of new COVID-19 infections

Florida has smashed the US’ record for the biggest single-day increase in positive coronavirus cases.

The southern US state reported 15,299 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, overshooting California’s record of 11,694 new infections, set in one day last Wednesday.

Another badly-hit state, New York, had encountered its own worst day on April 15 with 11,571 cases.

The record number of new infections in Florida, America’s fourth most populous state, was announced less than twenty-four hours after Disney reopened its famous theme parks to the public.

A statement by Florida’s Department of Health statistics said on Sunday that the extra numbers of people who tested positive had pushed the tally of cases to 269,811, with 45 deaths.

If the state were a country of its own, it would rank fourth in the world for the most new cases a day behind the US, Brazil and India.

On Sunday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said the US again had the most new coronavirus cases in the world, with more than 66,000 nationwide
