A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Port-Harcourt has remanded in correctional center, four Ex Police Officers who allegedly tortured an auto mechanic, Chima Ikwunado to death and inflicted grievous injuries on four others.
The suspects are Ayogu Fidelis, Eke Chibuzor, Egbunfu Felix and Rose Georgewill were arraigned in court by the police on 7-count charges bothering on murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to murder.
Correspondent Awajis George reports that when the charges were read to the suspects in court but they pleaded not guilty.
The chief magistrate, Mr Promise Iroanya after listening to arguments from the prosecuting and defence counsels said the crime committed was a capital offence and that the court lacks jurisdiction to try the suspects.
Mr Iroanya ordered the case file to be transferred to the Department of Public Prosecution, DPP; for advice, while the suspects were remanded in correctional center.
Counsel for the 3rd Defendant, Livingstone Nwonyike said the court has ordered that the case be filed appropriately in respect to count four, five, six and seven because those were counts that the magistrate court has jurisdiction to drive and grant bail.
On her part, counsel for the complainant, Princess Lawrence said the victims complained that the number of the defendants that tortured them were not complete in court.
Mrs. Lawrence said she was surprised that the police called up only four defendants in court.
The matter was adjourned to the September 18.
