Edo State government says it will strengthen its collaboration with the Federal Fire Service to develop a framework and enforcement mechanism to ensure adequate prevention of fire disaster in the State.
The state Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki stated this in Benin at the inauguration of a six thousand liter capacity fire fighting appliance deployed to the state by the Federal Fire Service.
Governor Obaseki observed that with the incessant fire outbreaks in major markets within the State such as Evbareke spare parts market, Santana, Ekiosa and Oba Market last month, there was need for proactive steps.
“With the assistance of the Federal Fire Service refurbishing some of our existing trucks, we are training our Fire manpower, we are also working with them to put hydrants and water facilities in all our markets so that there is enough water for their use in fire incidents, the Governor said”.
The Controller General Federal Fire Service, Dr Liman Ibrahim, represented by an Assistant Controller General, in charge of Federal Operations, Thompson Mohammed expressed delight over the synergy the Federal Fire Service has enjoyed with the Governor and affirmed that the deployment of the fire trucks was part of the service pledge to help curtail fire outbreaks in the State.
The Controller General appealed to the Edo State Government to approve the placement of State Fire Service personnel on Paramilitary salary structure so they could be at par with their federal and other States counterparts.
