Abule-Egba explosion: Lagos govt empowers displaced residents

The Lagos State Government has empowered the three hundred and twenty residents of Abule-Egba who were displaced last January when a vandalised oil pipeline exploded in the area.

The Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osayintolu, who made this known at a news conference in Alausa, Ikeja said financial assistance were given to the displaced residents as part of activities leading to the closure of the Igando IDP camp where the affected residents had been accommodated in the last six months

According to Dr Oke-Osanyintolu, sixty nine families were given two hundred and twenty five thousand Naira each while twenty five individuals received one hundred and fifty thousand Naira each to enable them go on with their lives

The LASEMA Director-General who said the financial assistance was a follow-up to the vocational and skill acquisition training programme earlier conducted for the victims to aid their resettlement, appealed to the beneficiaries to make judicious use of all that they have been empowered with.

Dr Osanyintolu said “We have appealed to them that they should not go into ventures that they don’t know, they should use this fund judicious, because in spite of the financial changes the State is currently facing as a result of COVID-19, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu did not forget about this people, he still took care of them”

He said the displaced persons were also given equipment and starter packs to enable them make use of the vocational skills which they acquired during their six month stay at the Igando Relief Camp.

The skills acquisition programme was concluded last month in conjunction with the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

Two persons died and property worth millions of Naira were destroyed in the Abule Egba disaster which occurred on January 19.
