National Assembly has suspended implementation of the 774,000 Public Works programme under the National Directorate of Employment.
A statement signed by spokesmen of the Senate and House of Reps, Senator Ajibola Basiru and Mr Benjamin Kalu says as legislators and elected representatives of the people should know the implementation modalities to ensuring constituents benefit from the programme.
On Wednesday, the National Assembly however suspended the implementation of the programme, following the faceoff between the Minister of State for Employment, Labour and Productivity, Mr Festus Keyamo, on Tuesday and the National Assembly committee members.
NASS asked Minister of Labour and Productivity and other relevant ministries to appear before the joint committee.
The programme was expected to take off in October this year.
The Statement says “National Assembly reminds members of the public that the Legislature was part of the conception of the programme, approved it and appropriated funds for its implementation as part of the COVID 19 response strategy”.
The National Assembly says the success and effective implementation of the engagement of 774,000 Public Works Workers remains the concern of the committee.
