The Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, Mrs Julie Donli has called on mothers and wives to be vigilant in caring for their children and wards to protect them from defilement and abuse.
Mrs.Donli stated this at an event organised by “Foundation for Child and Women’s Happiness” an NGO on the protection of women and children in the society in Abuja.
Sh said many cases of rape and defilement were detected by neighbours and strangers and not the mothers of victims.
Mrs. Donli also called on parents to avoid child nudity and exposure as it causes vulnerability of children to defilement.
The Executive Secretary of the National Council for Child’s Right Advocacy of Nigeria, Mr. Archibong Anderson said the call for death penalty or castration for child castration was complicated as it could lead to more trauma on the victim in cases where family members are involved.
Mr Anderson called for more psycho-social support for victims of rape and defilement.
The NGO says it intends to collect the signature of one million Nigerians to support death penalty for child defilement and rape.
