Former Chairman, National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria Professor Chidi Odinkalu has sued the Kaduna state Government, the Inspector General of Police and 3 others against infringement on his Fundamental Rights.
Professor Odinkalu in the suit at the Federal High Court in Kaduna is requesting for ₦950 million for the said infringement.
According to the appellate counsel, Ms Gloria Ballason, the applicant is accusing Kaduna state government for embarking on secret criminal proceedings against the applicant without fair hearing because he expressed his views on a National Television in February 2019.
Ms Ballason said the suit is also asking the court to restraint the State Commissioner of Police from initiating any arrest and prosecution of Prof Chidi Odinkalu for performing his constitutional obligations as a human rights activists.
Justice Peter Mallong granted some International Non Governmental Organisations including, the American Bar Association and United Nations Expert on Human Rights Minai Kiai permission to join in the hearing.
The hearing which began in Abuja and was transferred to the Kaduna High Court has been adjourned to the first week of July.
