The House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts has summoned the Minister of Industry Trade and Investments, Mr Otunba Niyi Adebayo to appear on Friday to explain the refusal by the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to honour the committee’s invitation.
Chairman of the Committee, Mr Oluwole Oke issued the summon at an investigative hearing of the committee in which the SON was billed to appear before the constitutional committee on refusal by the agency to render its yearly audited accounts to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) office since 2014.
The Director-General SON or his representative was called upon at the meeting to shed light on the contentious issue raised by the AGF’s annual report but he was conspicuously absent neither was he represented by any official of the agency.
Mr Oke informed the lawmakers that the agency had been invited severally by the probe panel and it had failed to appear.
He noted the provisions of Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) saying that the committee has inherent powers to summon and even arrest any top government official or those in Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDA).
