Katsina State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), says it has arrested 158 suspects and convicted 16 others on drug-related charges from January to date.
Commandant of the agency, Momodu Sule disclosed this at a news briefing in Katsina to mark this year’s United Nations’ Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking.
Mr. Sule said the 16 convicts were all males and were serving various jail terms between three months and three years.
He noted that at present, several cases were in court, including the 158 suspects arrested by the agency this year.
The NDLEA Katsina State Commander said the command has also seized 361 kilograms of hard drugs and rehabilitated 120 drug addicts within the period under review.
He lamented that the consumption of illicit drugs remains a major cause of armed banditry and other violent crimes in the country, noting that addressing the problem will go long way in reducing crime and criminality in the state.
In his remarks, Special Adviser to state governor on Drugs, Narcotics and Human Trafficking, Hamza Borodo, said his department has established 3 reformation centres in the state and was working in collaboration with relevant state and federal agencies to address the problem of illicit drug consumption in the state.
