FCTA to rehabilitate Moshood Abiola stadium

The FCT Administration is to partner with the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development for the rehabilitation of the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja for its optimal utilization.

The Minister of the FCT, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, stated this when he received, Minister of Youth and Sports in Abuja, Mr Sunday Dare.

The FCT Minister said that the stadium was very important public monument that had not served its full potential.

He said the stadium could be turned into a major tourist destination within the country.

According to the FCT minister, apart from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, the stadium is the second most iconic noticeable public edifice in the city of Abuja.

“Rehabilitating the stadium is going to be in our own joint interest, not only as an Administration but as a people … particularly now that it’s very clear that moving abroad for holidays or for short trips that was the popular pastime of many in Nigeriais not going to be as it used to be…as a matter of fact, in the last two and half months, flights have not flown out or come into this country. So, it is now that we will start to appreciate the beauty of what we have across the country”.The minister noted.

The minister urged the Sports Ministry to work out a long term sustainable plan with the private sector to open up the various facilities in the stadium for public use and also to give attention to vegetation control, waste evacuation and lighting.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare, said that the ministry was committed to ensuring that the iconic monument, Moshood Abiola Stadium become fully functional.

The sports Minister gave insight into some of the facilites in the stadium to include 5000 capacity parking lot, 64,000 capacity sitting arena, 54 furnished executive suites, nine different football practice pitches, Olympic swimming pool and eight massive generators.

The sport Minister added that there was a stream that runs across it and a massive expanse of land to build a five-star hotel, noted that the stadium would be turned into real estate and a sporting facility that would be the pride of this country .
