NUJ gives police ultimatum over harassment

Adamawa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has given the State Command of the Nigeria Police three days ultimatum to take decisive action against the Officer in charge of State Anti-robbery Squad, SARS, and DPO of Jimeta Division for coordinating uncivilised operation on the Secretariat of the Union in Yola on Thursday or face blackout.

This is contain in a statement signed by the State Council Chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Donald Dedan and made available to newsmen in Yola.

The statement said, on Thursday evening, three Police Hilux Vans loaded with Police carrying dangerous weapons stormed NUJ Press Center and harassed, intimidates, assaulted and arrested twelve associate members of the NUJ to its headquarters.

The statement pointed out that, the two said officers are a threat to working journalists and journalism activities in the state.

Its said, the Union would not be intimidated or harassed by security operatives to abandon the Press Center which serves as the Secretariat and Situation room for COVID-19 for all practicing journalists in Adamawa State.

According to the statement, NUJ as a Professional Industrial Union is mindful and respectful to the lockdown rules and regulations of the Federal and State Governments and assured to continue.

The statement however said, the Union is asking the State Police Command to render an unreserved apology within three days to the Union.
