Governors urge FG to suspend deductions, debt payments

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum NGF has called for fiscal measures that will safeguard the liquidity of state governments.

They called for the suspension of all state deductions and restructure all debt service payments by federal government and Central Bank of Nigeria.

Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ekiti state, Dr.Kayode Fayemi made the called after a briefing by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning Hajiya Zainab Ahmed on fiscal measures that are taken by the federal government to mitigate the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a teleconference meeting with other Governors, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq said there were incentives in place from the federal government to support vulnerable households across the states in the coming months.

The meeting discussed the legality of the lockdown in other states across the country and resolved to maintain the status quo until the leadership of forum resolves the matter with the Presidential Committee on COVID-19.

The Governors also resolved to leverage on the lock down to send substantial food items to other states as part of the palliatives measure.
