President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Ministry of Finance Budget and National Planning to ensure continuous payment of salary no matter the impact of Covid-19 on the economy.
The Minister, Hajia Zainab Ahmad, stated this after the Committee on the Impact of Covid-19 on the Economy briefed the President on the current state of affairs.
She said the President had also directed the ministry to ensure that critical infrastructure like roads, rail, and others were protected, and that as much as possible, local inputs be used in the projects to retain value within the countrys economy.
The President, according to her, has further directed that measures that protect the poor and the vulnerable be put in place.
She said the consequences of the lockdown were the additional slowing down of the economy and the measures that were needed to take to mitigate such negative impacts on trade and businesses.
Another member of the committee and Minister of State Petroleum Resources, Mr. Timipre Sylva, said the economy was not in the best of shape due to the impact of pandemic, saying that oil prices are collapsing every day, hence the need for the President to be constantly briefed.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria , and member of the committee, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, said the situation was tough, assuring however that the government was on top of it, adding that the situation would be resolved, and Nigerians would be better for it.
