An explosion in Akure, Ondo state, has destroyed many buildings including residential houses, church and a school, cutting off Akure-Owo road.
Official are yet to make a statement but many people are said to have been wounded.
The site of the explosion has a deep crater cutting off the road and hindering vehicular movement.
Over sixty buildings were damaged by the explosion.
Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and the State commissioner of police , Mr Undie Andie were at the scene.
The governor who was briefed by the commissioner was told that a vehicle in a convoy transporting explosives to a storage facility in a neighbouring state developed a fault and while security personnel and other individuals transporting the ordinances noticed smoke from the vehicle, they attempted to extinguish the fire.
It however ignited causing a massive explosion that was felt in Akure and its environs.
The governor said efforts were being made to ascertain if there were casualties.
He further directed that the area be cordoned off to allow the explosive ordinance department/bomb squad to extricate the vehicle buried underground because it was unclear if there were still explosives.
