The Imo state police command has arrested a gang of suspected kidnappers for the abduction and subsequent murder of Mrs Comfort Okoro, the wife of a traditional ruler in Uratta, Owerri North LGA of the state.
Parading the suspects in Owerri, the Public Relations Officer of the Command Mr Orlando Ikeokwu said the suspects collected four million naira ransom after the victim died in their custody but were apprehended in the process of collecting additional one million naira from the family.
He explained that the alleged coordinator of the gang was facing trial in Owerri prisons for a different crime from where he masterminded the operation, noting that the command has concluded arrangements to pick him up from the prisons to aid investigations.
Mr Ikeokwu paraded one Moses Moses, a twenty-two-year-old boy from Edo state who allegedly murdered his colleague and siphoned millions of naira from his account.
He narrated another incident involving one Wisdom Amagwu who was a soldier but absconded from Maiduguri where he was redeployed and connived with others to kidnap and later murdered their victim whom he said identified him during the operation.
All the suspects confessed their involvement in the crimes.
Radio Nigeria reports that a total of twenty-six suspects were arrested by the command within the last two months while exhibits that were recovered included assorted arms and ammunition, stolen vehicles and military wears.
