Senate committee on industry advocates return of SON to ports

The Senate Committee on Industries says it will support the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to drive the nation’s manufacturing sector to grow the economy.

Senator Osinowo stated this during an oversight function at SON’s laboratory complex in Ogba, Lagos State.

He said the manufacturing sector was key to economic development, creating wealth and job opportunities for the nation’s teeming youths.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Industries, Senator Bayo Osinowo, said SON wass vital for the manufacturing sector to compete with its counterparts across the globe.

He expressed displeasure over the absence of SON at the port.

A member of the Committee, Senator, Peter Nwaobosh, said the Committee wass not impressed that SON was not at the point of entry where  goods were being brought into the country,

He said SON must be equipped and given the opportunity to assess the goods before they enter the nation’s markets. Responding, the Director General, SON, Osita Aboloma, said the oversight was to give the Senate Committee first hand information about the level of progress made so far by SON in the wake of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).
