Father of highlife music in Nigeria, Olaiya dies at 89

Dr. Victor Abimbola Olaiya played with the Sammy Akpabot Band, was leader and trumpeter for the Old Lagos City Orchestra and joined the Bobby Benson Jam Session Orchestra

The legend of highlife music, Dr. Victor Abimbola Olaiya is dead, Bimbo Esho. Managing Director of Evergreen Music Company said in a statement,

Olaiya, born 31 December 1930 was an extremely famous trumpeter in the 1950s and early 1960s.

One of his nieces was Moji Olaiya of Supr Story, who died on May 17, 2017, from cardiac arrest in Canada,

He died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi-Araba at noon on Wednesday.
