Katsina to stiffer sanctions on indiscriminate cutting down of trees

The International Centre for Energy, Environment and Development, ICEED has applauded Katsina state government for taking the lead amongst other States in the campaigns against indiscriminate cutting down of trees for fuel wood. 

This commendation was made by the Executive Director of ICEED Mr. Ewan Eleri during the inauguration of the Campaign for Clean Cook Energy under the Katsina state Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

According to Mr. Eleri the use of fuel wood as a source of cooking energy has been reduced to 65% in Katsina state as locals are now using the Dadin-Kowa clean cook stove invented by ICEED. 

On its part,  the Katsina state House of Assembly through the member representing Charanchi local government area who is also the Chairman House Committee on Agriculture Lawal Kuraye reiterated its commitment towards reviewing and enacting Laws to sanction cutting down of trees.

To this end, the Katsina state House of Assembly has pledge to review existing Laws and perhaps enact news ones that would stipulates stiffer sanctions against indiscriminate cutting down of trees across the state. 

Apart from launching of the newly formed unit in the state’s ministry of Agriculture and natural resources, Katsina state has also launched the efficient fuel wood use plan forum which would provide technical training, financing, public awareness and partnership amongst key players. 

Also the Katsina state Commissioner for Commerce and Industry Mukthar Kado called people in the state to imbibed the habit of tree planting towards reducing the menace of Desertification. 

Many Farming Communities across Katsina state are facing the problems of desertification and deserts encouragement which is affecting Agriculture production in the state.
