Army to investigate allegations of misconduct by soldiers

The Nigerian Army says authorities have commenced investigations into allegations of requesting and receiving bribe by some soldiers stations in parts of Borno state.

This is in reaction to amateur videos circulating on social media where the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Zulum accused soldiers of Operation LAFIYA DOLE deployed to Maiduguri–Damaturu Road of extorting commuters and causing unwarranted traffic holdup.

Army Operations Media Coordinator Colonel Aminu Iliyasu said in a statement, ” Army as a professional and disciplined institution views such allegations seriously, particularly coming from a State Executive.”

The Army said thorough investigations would be carried out and where any infractions were established against any personnel, appropriate sanctions would be applied.

COlonel Iliyasu said: Public outburst particularly by eminent personalities such as a State Executive could be counterproductive and capable of reversing the gains recorded so far in the ongoing fight against insurgents and other criminal elements across the nation.”

Borno Governor, Professor Zulum commended the swift reaction of the army.

Zulum said the speedy response from the army headquarters only reaffirms what every Nigerian already knows about the exceptional leadership credentials of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai.
